In this month’s “Ask Melissa” column of DASH Magazine, a reader asks: “I always end up buying too much when I shop at warehouse stores. What’s the trick?”
Her answer: It’s tempting to buy large quantities when the price is right, but remember: The most expensive ingredient is the one you throw away. To avoid wasting food, once I get home, I package and store bulk items in easy-to-use increments—like freezing ground beef in one-pound portions. Then, I make a quick meal plan to use up any perishables. Cut broccoli, for example, might show up in a stir-fry, raw with a dip, and again with pasta. Also, before you buy, keep in mind that stacking sales and coupons at the supermarket could save you even more than shopping at warehouse stores.
